By Michelle Janse van Vuuren, marketing manager, Canon SA

The recession crunch has hit the globe; however, locally Canon has not been impacted as severely as some of our European and US counterparts. Granted, we are in a worldwide recession and living in an economic downturn but fortunately we continue to weather the storm, albeit very stormy waters.

We, here at Canon SA, therefore remain optimistic. While some of our products are experiencing some form of sales decline, others are growing – despite economic challenges – and driving our business forward.

This not only positively impacts our business for the rest of the year but also our partners’ as they can stay afloat with products and services that will sustain them in tougher times.

We are seeing nice-to-have, luxury products impacted by the slump, however, essential devices such as single and multifunctional printers continue to do well. This said; the upper end of the market is also not as harshly impacted as this segment caters to a particular user base which is not as influenced financially by economic pressure.

The above does not mean we’ve become complacent. From a company perspective, Canon continues to create the push and pull effect through vehicles such as our PR campaigns that provide both us and our partners with additional brand awareness and value add.

Indeed, we have used our campaigns to replace our classic marketing approach which we believe provides us with considerable extra mileage without the resultant marketing spend.

We are also stepping up our Point of Sale (PoS) campaign, exposing the Canon brand to dealers and retail outlets more aggressively. Also, we continue to utilise important periods such as Easter to showcase Canon products at high-traffic shopping centres including Sandton and Eastgate. Also, our Photo/Video amateur roadshow will soon hit three major cities – Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg – creating important awareness of some of the latest offerings in this segment.

The reality is as a company we’ve looked at other avenues and vehicles to drive brand awareness and stay ahead of our competition. Our staff is committed and we believe together with our partners the economic downturn will soon be a thing of the past.

CANON WINS BLI’S ‘MFP LINE OF THE YEAR’ AWARD

Canon Europe, world leader in imaging solutions, has been awarded the ‘MFP Line of the Year’ Award by Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI), the world’s leading independent tester of document imaging products. The award was given to Canon earlier this year, for the company’s range of colour and black-and-white multifunctional printers, reflecting strong performance across many different categories of devices throughout 2008

• Canon wins Buyers Laboratory’s 2008 ‘MFP Line of the Year’ Award for the sixth time since 2000;

• Four multifunctional printers from Canon awarded 2008 ‘End of Year Pick’ awards by Buyers Laboratory;

• Canon won more ‘Pick’ awards in 2008 than any other vendor.

The BLI ‘MFP Line of the Year’ is awarded to the best overall MFP range based on regular and exhaustive lab-based evaluations. BLI also acknowledges the best in class with its twice yearly ‘Pick’ awards. MFPs have to prove outstanding performance in a wide range of areas, including reliability, productivity, image quality, ease of use, IT and security.

CANON BRINGS 15.1 MP AND FULL HD VIDEO TO PHOTOGRAPHY ENTHUSIASTS: THE EOS 500D

Canon announced the new 15.1MP EOS 500D which offers photographers an outstanding combination of features. Following the launch of the first Canon EOS camera to shoot movies – the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008 – Canon now brings Full High Definition (HD) video capability to consumers in a compact and lightweight DSLR.

The new EOS 500D features a 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor – ideal for large detailed prints or enormous cropping possibilities. For shooting in near-dark conditions, the EOS 500D offers a high ISO sensitivity up to 3200 which is expandable to 12800, giving photographers the power to shoot in the dimmest light conditions. Outstanding noise reduction is made possible by Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor.

The EOS 500D heralds a new way for photography enthusiasts to capture their world. It pairs outstanding still image capture with Full HD 1080P video recording. For longer video shoots, users can also choose lower shooting resolutions of 720P or VGA. A built-in HDMI connection allows easy and instant review of images and movie clips on any compatible HDTV.

Every detail revealed

Exacting image preview and review is provided by a 3.0” Clear View LCD screen. The same screen as used on the acclaimed 5D Mark II, it features a 920,000 dot count – for ultra-detailed image review, accurate focus checks, and clear access to the EOS menu system. As well as aiding shooting from awkward angles, Live View mode includes contrast based and Face Detection AF options. Ideal for newcomers to digital SLR photography, these allow compact-camera style auto focus, with a real-time image displayed on the LCD.

Fast processing, fast focusing

CANON STRENGTHENS TILT & SHIFT RANGE WITH TWO
NEW ADDITIONS

  • Canon launches ultra-wide angle 17mm tilt and shift lens – the world’s widest in 35mm format photography
  • New 24mm tilt and shift lens offers largest range of movement available

Canon today announces the launch of two new tilt and shift lenses, the Ultra-Wide angle TS-E 17mm f/4L and the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, an upgrade to the popular TS-E 24mm f/3.5L.

At 17mm, the TS-E 17mm f/4L has the widest view angle of any tilt and shift lens currently available; coupled with outstanding image quality across the whole frame,
it is an ideal choice for architectural or landscape photography. Building on the
success of its predecessor, the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, like the TS-E 17mm f/4L, now
includes Canon’s sub-wavelength structure coating (SWC). Canon’s patented lens
coating is specifically designed to minimise ghosting and flare caused by internal
reflections to help deliver crisp, clear images.

Canon was the first company to offer 35mm camera users a combined tilt and shift
lens, With 36 years experience in this field, Canon has now added a new unique
functionality to the TS-E 17mm f/4L and TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, allowing users to
rotate the direction of the tilt and shift independently of each other.

This affords greater control over the focal plane, replicating the movements of a large format view camera. Canon’s revolutionary tilt and shift revolving mechanism is
particularly useful when shooting product shots from a perspective where specific
framing and focal plane is required.

The new lenses, influenced by feedback from professional photographers, have
been created to produce the best image quality with high resolution, high contrast
and low distortion. The use of high-precision asphercial front elements keeps
distortion, common in wide angle lenses, to an absolute minimum, even at the
edges of the frame.

The TS-E 17mm f/4L and TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II also feature multiple UD elements to reduce chromatic aberration and optimised focus mechanisms.

Canon today has also introduced a new range (52mm to 72mm) of versatile, multifunctional PL-C B polarizing filters to help reduce reflections from glass or water or darken blue skies. The PL-C B’s, which are now available in 52mm, 58mm, 67mm,
72mm, 77mm and 82mm filter thread sizes, also allows the lens cap to be attached
to the lens to prevent damage to the filter if left attached when not in use.

Key features of the TS-E 17mm f/4L and TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II include:

  • Tilt and shift lenses compatible with all Canon EOS cameras
  • Ultra Wide 17mm / wide 24mm focal length, ideal for architecture and landscapes

  • Tilt and shift mechanism rotates +/-90° allowing shift in any direction
  • Tilt mechanism rotates +/-90° allowing tilt in any direction relative to the shift
  • Aspherical and UD lens elements minimise chromatic aberration
  • Sub-wavelength structure and super-spectra coatings minimise ghosting and flare
  • Circular aperture for creative, blurred highlights
  • TS-E 17mm f/4L has a floating internal focus mechanism delivers high image quality throughout focus range.

THE NEW POWERSHOT SX200 IS: CANON’S SUPER COMPACT WIDE ZOOM

Canon today strengthens its PowerShot range of digital cameras with the launch of the PowerShot SX200 IS – a new Super Zoom model in a strikingly compact body. With a wide-angle (28mm) 12x optical zoom lens and powered by Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor for ultra-fast performance and outstanding image quality, this 12.1 Megapixel camera is the ideal travel companion.

Richly detailed movies can be shot in High Definition (720p, 30fps), with a built-in HDMI connection for playback on HD televisions. The addition of a full Manual shooting mode gives users control when they want it.

Designed with travel in mind

With a classic aluminium design available in black, blue or red the PowerShot SX200 IS packs a lot into a compact body, making it the perfect camera for the keen traveller. A powerful 12x zoom lens, beginning at a wide 28mm, tackles landscape shots or distant subjects with equal effectiveness. Canon’s 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer technology combats the blur caused by camera shake – even at the telephoto end of the zoom range and in low-light situations.

Small on size, big on quality

Incredible 12.1 Megapixel resolution is captured by the camera’s sensor, offering the freedom to crop or enlarge images to perfection with no loss in detail. Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor uses improved algorithms and calculation accuracy, allowing the PowerShot SX200 IS to deliver ultra-fast operation, and rich, low-noise images with outstanding clarity and colour reproduction.

Intelligent features for maximum creativity

For maximum results with minimum effort, the PowerShot SX200 IS incorporates a new Smart Auto mode and enhanced Easy mode. Both of these modes use Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to analyse the shooting scene in detail – checking subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue – then select optimum settings accordingly. Photographers wanting total control over their shots can switch to a full Manual control mode.

DIGIC 4 processing also drives greater accuracy in Canon’s other intelligent technologies. Improved Motion Detection and Servo AF aid blur-free capture of moving subjects, while i-Contrast brightens dark areas of images without blowing out lighter areas. Canon’s Face Detection Technology now includes new Blink Detection, to help avoid the disappointment of mistimed portrait shots. FaceSelf-Timer simplifies group shots or self portraits by waiting until the user enters the frame before shooting.

Movies in High Definition

For moments that deserve a place on TV, users can supplement their still images with continuous video clips in breathtaking High Definition (720p). The integrated HDMI connection allows instant playback on any HDTV.

The large 3.0” LCD allows easy framing and detailed review of shots and movies alike, with a wide viewing angle enabling easy sharing. In addition, a clever new User Interface provides on-screen Hints and Tips – perfect for users looking to learn more about how different settings affect shots.

Exceptional quality

Incredible 12.1 Megapixel resolution is captured by the camera’s sensor, allowing the freedom to crop or enlarge images while retaining outstanding image detail. The 3x zoom lens offers a range of versatile framing options, with Image Stabilizer preventing camera-shake from causing unwanted blur. This is particularly useful when participating in the high-movement activities for which the camera is designed.

A new Smart Auto mode uses Scene Detection Technology to analyse the shooting scene in detail – checking subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then selects the optimum mode from 18 possible choices, ensuring perfect settings for the scene.

Even the most active situations can be photographed blur-free thanks to Canon’s Motion Detection Technology, which detects both camera and subject movement and adjusts settings accordingly. Naturally great people shots are assured by Face Detection Technology, which now also includes new Blink Detection, to avoid the disappointment of mistimed people shots. Canon’s i-Contrast brightens dark areas in an image without blowing out lighter areas.

The PowerShot D10 also features a special 2.5” PureColor LCD II, which has been specially modified for better outdoor performance. Protected by a 2mm protective shield, it offers double the brightness of a normal PureColor LCD II – allowing easy framing or image review in virtually any environment.

EVERYTHING FOR THE HOME OFFICE: CANON INTRODUCES TWO AFFORDABLE OFFICE ALL-IN-ONES

Canon today announces two new PIXMA inkjet All-In-One models, designed for home office users. Featuring distinctive, contemporary designs, the PIXMA MX320 and PIXMA MX330 – which replace the PIXMA MX300 and PIXMA MX310 respectively – include versatile print, copy, scan, fax and ADF functionality, at price points ideal for first-time buyers and price-conscious consumers. In addition to the extensive feature set offered by the PIXMA MX320, the PIXMA MX330 boasts a 4.5cm (1.8”) TFT display and several extra copier functions.

Fast, detailed and accurate

Both models can be used for a range of scanning and copying applications. A maximum scan resolution of 1200dpi equips the PIXMA MX320 and PIXMA MX330 for detailed photo scanning to create enlargements. Alternatively, batch document scanning and copying is facilitated by a 30-sheet Auto Document Feeder (ADF).

PROFESSIONAL PRINT QUALITY FOR DISCERNING PHOTOGRAPHERS: THE PIXMA PRO9000 MARK II

Canon’s announced a new way for serious photographers to create professional-quality prints up to A3+ or 14” wide: the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II. Replacing the PIXMA Pro9000, the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II refines the design of its predecessor to offer faster, higher-quality monochrome printing, a wider range of supported media, and a new Ambient Light Correction feature.

Print for gallery or portfolio

Taking full advantage of Canon’s rich imaging heritage, the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II creates vibrant and professional-quality prints. Default printing speeds in monochrome are now nearly three times faster than before, while accurate colour reproduction across a wide colour gamut is guaranteed by the 8-colour ChromaLife100 Single-Inks system. The addition of 16 bits per channel print capability, with 276 trillion different colours available, offers outstandingly smooth tonal gradations.

Tiny 2pl ink droplets are placed with precision, using Canon’s FINE print head technology. And because the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II uses a system of single, individually replaceable inks, wastage is minimised.

Media for every occasion
The PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II provides photographers with an extensive choice of print media options. Canon’s own range of media includes Gloss, Semi-gloss and Matte Photo Papers, plus Fine Art medias. Users can also load the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II with a variety of specialist, third-party medias – such as Baryta types, canvas, and numerous other Fine Art medias – from leading manufacturers including Canson, Hahnemühle, Innova, PCM Takeo and Pictorico. A flat paper path ensures that medias up to 1.2mm thick remain pristine and crease-free.

Precision colour control

Included with the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II is Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint Pro software – a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Canon Digital Photo Professional and the bundled Adobe Photoshop Elements 6. Easy-PhotoPrint Pro allows photographers to batch print different images from Photoshop or Digital Photo Professional, simplifying the procedure by giving access to all the required print settings on one screen. When used with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software, the plug-in enables Canon EOS photographers to print directly from RAW files without having to convert images to any intermediate formats. Users of other D-SLR cameras can use Adobe Photoshop Elements to enable RAW file conversion and printing.

New for the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II is an Ambient Light Correction feature using Canon Kyuanos technology. Users can select the type of lighting under which a print will be displayed; the colours in the final print are then automatically adjusted to ensure that the displayed result looks just the way the photographer intended.

“Serious photography enthusiasts want their images to look good, wherever they’re used”, says Abri Kriegler, product manager at Canon Consumer Imaging South Africa. “The PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II provides a complete one-box solution to that demand.”

Key features: PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II

CANON RELEASES ULTRA-COMPACT SD FLASH CAMCORDERS

Canon SA is putting the fun back into camcorders with the release of the ultra-compact and power-efficient flash memory LEGRIA FS22, LEGRIA FS21, LEGRIA FS20 and LEGRIA FS200 which can shoot continuously for up to three and a half hours on a single charge.

Each new model benefits from a range of features that make moviemaking easier than ever before, allowing users to shoot in complete freedom. Canon’s Video Snapshot function automatically grabs short movie clips at the touch of a button – these clips are the perfect size for playing back together in sequence, in-camera.

With the new Pre REC function, as soon as the record button is pushed, the preceding three seconds of action are also captured – a great way to ensure that the key shot is never missed. And a new, dedicated Playback button makes footage review easier than ever. At the top of the range, versatile Dual Flash Memory camcorders record to internal memory and memory cards. Models with 32GB, 16GB and 8GB internal flash drives are available.

The LEGRIA FS200 – available in four colours – shoots straight to memory card, a great way to share movie clips immediately.

“Our LEGRIA FS-RANGE combines the benefits of flash with truly easy-to-use functionality,” comments Roger Machin, product manager at Canon Consumer Imaging SA.

Key features:

• Lightweight and stylish design, weighing around 230g: Canon’s lightest ever camcorders
• Full range options:
• Dual Flash Memory models record to SD/SDHC memory cards as well as internal memory: 32GB (LEGRIA FS22), 16GB (LEGRIA FS21) or 8GB (LEGRIA FS20) models are available
• Direct to SD/SDHC recording with the LEGRIA FS200
• Several new features that make moviemaking easy:
• Video Snapshot: a fun way to create movie montages in-camera
• Pre REC: ensures that key shots are never missed
• Simplified controls with the new Dual Shot option: video and still images can both be captured without the need to switch shooting modes, allowing users to keep their eyes on what they are shooting
• Advanced Zoom gets closer to the subject without sacrificing image quality: 45x (LEGRIA FS22, LEGRIA FS21 and LEGRIA FS20) or 41x (LEGRIA FS200) reach
• New Quick Charge feature for super-fast battery recharge times; 3x normal speed means up to one hour’s shooting from just a 20 minute charge
• Microphone input and headphone jack for superior audio capture
• Easy sharing: compatible with Canon’s standalone DVD Burner, the DW-100; Software Solution Disk and PIXELA ImageMixer video editing software supplied as standard.

Designed for fun: the advantages of flash memory

Significantly smaller than predecessor models – the FS11, FS10 and FS100 – each new LEGRIA FS-series camcorders fits comfortably into a jacket pocket or a small bag. Weighing approximately 230g, each one is designed to be carried throughout the day.

Such a lightweight design is made possible by flash memory. Much smaller and lighter than traditional recording formats, flash brings with it a range of other benefits. With quicker start-up times and more responsive controls, flash also requires much less power – compared to other recording media, flash allows users to keep on shooting for longer. Flash memory is also incredibly robust. Unlike tapes and Hard Disk Drives, it has no moving parts, so footage remains safe even if a camcorder is dropped or shaken.

In addition to ultra-efficient flash memory, new LEGRIA FS-series models introduce a brand new feature: Quick Charge. After a long day’s shooting, all it takes is 20 minutes to recharge a flat battery for a further one hour’s recording to automatic.

A complete range

For users who require maximum flexibility, Dual Flash Memory camcorders combine internal memory and memory card shooting.

The top-of-the-range LEGRIA FS22 has a large-size 32GB internal flash drive – enough for over 20 hours of recording time, there’s no need to worry about carrying spare media around. And on the longest days out, capacity is easily supplemented by memory cards.

Alternatively, the LEGRIA FS21 offers 16GB internal memory, equivalent to over 10 hours of recording time. With 8GB of internal memory, the LEGRIA FS20 can store over 5 hours of video.

For users who like to share their movies, the LEGRIA FS200 records straight to SD or SDHC (High Capacity) memory cards – easy-to-buy and inexpensive, card media is perfect for passing on to friends.

Moviemaking made easy

Combined with the benefits of flash memory, a range of exciting recording features is introduced with the new LEGRIA FS-series.

Unique to Canon camcorders in 2009, Video Snapshot mode provides an easy way to record a day out – doing away with the need for complex editing. All it takes is the press of a single button to capture a four second sequence of video. Afterwards, it’s a simple job to put together an engaging movie by creating a montage of clips. The finished movie can then be played back to music – a selection of rights-free tracks is provided in-camera; alternatively, users can upload their personal favourites from their PC.

With the new Pre REC function, the camcorder continually buffers three seconds of movie footage while the LCD screen is open. From the moment the user presses the record button, the preceding three seconds are automatically added to the beginning of the clip. This is an effective guarantee against missing the shot, should the action happen faster than expected. In effect, Pre REC allows users to rewind time.

Video or stills? Dual Shot makes it simple

Alongside dedicated Video and Still shooting options – which offer users a range of manual controls – a third option on the function dial introduces Dual Shot. Switching to Dual Shot sets all of the camcorder’s key controlsleaving the user free to concentrate on filming video and shooting photographs. In Dual Shot, stills can be taken at any time – including during video recording.

Accessing Playback mode has also been simplified. With a single press of a dedicated button, users gain access to a thumbnail menu displaying the footage and the still images they have captured, ready for preview.

The power of DIGIC DV II: up to 45x Advanced Zoom

Canon’s unique DIGIC DV II processor – originally designed for the demands of HD imaging – brings extraordinary processing power to the LEGRIA FS-series. Combined with the optical quality of a genuine Canon Video Lens, it allows each camcorder to offer the incredible reach of Canon’s Advanced Zoom system – users get closer to the action with no loss in image quality. Advanced Zoom is available at either 45x (LEGRIA FS22, LEGRIA FS21 and LEGRIA FS20) or 41x (LEGRIA FS200) reach.

The extras that Canon offers

Unlike many Standard Definition camcorders, with new LEGRIA FS models a microphone input connection and a headphone jack come as standard – the best way to capture and monitor audio during recording.

With an easy-to-use suite of software supplied, editing and sharing movies is simple – whether burning a DVD or uploading a movie to the web. In addition, every LEGRIA FS-series camcorder is compatible with Canon’s DW-100 DVD Burner, a shortcut to one-touch archiving.

CANON INTRODUCES FUTURISTIC LEGRIA HD CAMCORDER TO SA USERS

Canon SA has released a new generation of High Definition (HD) flash memory camcorders: the professional-standard LEGRIA HF S-series to the South African marketplace.

The series combines advanced imaging technologies, enabling videographers to take their moviemaking to new heights. Indeed, the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 represent a breakthrough for HD recording.

The award-winning Canon HD Camcorder System has been updated and redesigned specifically for the LEGRIA HF S-series. Combining an 8.0 Megapixel Full HD CMOS sensor, a genuine Canon HD Video Lens with a 10x optical zoom, and the new DIGIC DV III processor, image capture size is almost three times greater than Full HD resolution – providing the ultimate in image quality.

With an extensive set of professional-level controls and features, the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 are equally suited to high-end consumers or professional movie sets.

“These two camcorders bring the picture quality of tomorrow to today’s creative photo video community; combining next-generation HD technologies with all the advantages of flash memory,” says Roger Machin, product manager at Canon Consumer Imaging SA.

The LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 feature:

• All-new Canon HD Camera System
• 58mm Canon HD Video Lens with 10x optical zoom, incorporating Super Range Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS)
• 8.0 Megapixel Full HD CMOS sensor
• High-speed processing with DIGIC DV III
• Customisable camcorder controls: user assignable manual Control Dial and Custom Key
• Advanced Image controls: Magnifying and Colour Peaking to aid manual focusing, Zebra Assist for manual exposure, selectable Automatic Gain Control (AGC) level limit, Colour Bar and Test Tone output
• Instant AF for fast, precise auto focus

Range options:

• LEGRIA HF S10: Dual Flash Memory recording to 32GB internal memory and SDHC memory cards
• LEGRIA HF S100: straight-to-memory card recording
• Microphone input, headphone output and manual controls for superior audio
• Advanced photo features: 8.0 Megapixel still images, orientation sensor and new Photo Burst mode
• Expandable system: mini Advanced Accessory Shoe, plus HDMI and component outputs
• Pre REC function ensures that the key shot is never missed
• Face Detection Technology, Dual Shot and Video Snapshot mode make it easy to create great looking movies
• PIXELA ImageMixer video editing software supplied; Canon Solution Disk for managing still images

The LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 advances are only possible thanks to a combination of unique Canon HD technologies.

With an 8.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor – 6.0 Megapixels effective for video – captured images are actually larger than 1920x1080 Full HD, ensuring that every last detail is retained. Video is then converted to Full HD resolution and recorded at the maximum data rate permitted under the AVCHD standard – 24Mbps – for pin-sharp images and smooth motion.

To maximise low-light performance, D138-series camcorders are constructed around a large, 58mm diameter lens with a 10x optical zoom. If more zoom is required, the 1.7x digital tele-converter function boosts the range to 17x while still retaining Full HD quality.

Canon’s Super Range Optical Image Stabilizer combines two kinds of shake detection systems, to better eliminate vibrations across the frequency range – from slow breathing patterns to the rapid vibrations of a car journey. With these advantages, the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 capture approximately 12.5% more image resolution than the award-winning Canon HF11.

The new DIGIC DV III image processor has been designed to handle the large amounts of image data received from the 8.0 Megapixel sensor. With improved colour gradation, it supports the expanded gamut of the xvYCC Colour Space (x.v.Color). DIGIC DV III also boasts superior AE (Auto Exposure) performance – including a 25% increase in dynamic range, providing natural hues in high contrast shooting conditions – and supports the introduction of Face Detection Technology.

Face Detection Canon Face Detection Technology can detect up to 35 faces in a single frame, optimising shooting settings appropriately. Up to nine faces can be highlighted: the user can select one as the main reference point. Sophisticated Face Select and Track technology – similar to that found in Canon compact digital cameras – ensures that this remains the focus for as long as possible. Face Detection AE (Auto Exposure) harnesses the power of DIGIC DV III to quickly achieve correct exposure. Face Detection AF (Auto Focus) employs Canon’s Instant AF system – which offers both speed and accuracy – to track faces and ensure that they are correctly focused. Canon’s Face Detection system is unique, responding exceptionally quickly and smoothly even when faces are framed against backgrounds that are significantly darker or lighter than the subject. With Face Jump and Face Timeline modes, searching through footage in playback is quick and easy.

Professional-level control

Shooting on LEGRIA HF S-series camcorders, videographers have a wide range of professional-level tools at their disposal, helping them achieve the look and feel they want. With direct access to manual shooting controls, via the customisable Control Dial and Custom Key, they can quickly respond to dynamically changing shooting conditions.

Colour Peaking exaggerates the edges of objects displayed on the LCD screen, aiding manual focusing. Zebra Assist makes it easier to judge when areas of a picture are over-exposed. The LCD screen can also be set to 100% underscan to show exactly what will be displayed on a TV screen. AGC level limits, usually only found on high-end camcorders, allow users to boost the camcorder’s responsiveness when shooting in low light conditions.

Technology to trust in

With a sculpted circular design that feels comfortable to hold, controls are intuitively placed under the hand. A new user interface makes for more effective operation of the camcorder through the menu system. During professional-level shoots, Colour Bar and Test Tone functions allow external monitors and audio equipment to be accurately calibrated to the camcorder’s output.

When engaged, the new Pre REC feature continuously records a three second buffer while the camcorder is switched on. From the moment the user presses the record button, the preceding three seconds are automatically added to the beginning of the clip. This is an effective guarantee against missing the shot, should the action happen faster than expected.

Canon Dual Shot simplifies the sometimes confusing array of shooting modes available on traditional function dials. Alongside dedicated Video and Still shooting modes, which allow access to manual shooting controls, lies a third option – Dual Shot.

Dual Shot sets all of the camcorder’s controls to automatic, allowing the user to concentrate on the subject they are shooting. Dual Shot also allows video and still images to be taken in quick succession, without the need to change shooting mode – stills can be taken at any point, even during video recording.

Along with the ability to capture high resolution 8.0MP still images, new Photo Burst allows users to make 25 still images – each captured at 2.07 Megapixel resolution – from a single second of movie footage. Playback has also been simplified and can be accessed at any time with one press of a dedicated button.

The advantages of flash memory

The LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 introduce users to all the benefits of flash memory. Flash requires less power than traditional recording media and offers faster start up times. Physically smaller, flash also allows for more compact, lighter camcorder designs.

And since flash memory involves no moving parts, footage stays safe, protected against the bumps and knocks a camcorder is often subjected to. The range offers two options: the Dual Flash Memory LEGRIA HF S10 shoots to 32GB of internal flash memory – enough for over 12 hours of HD video recording at the most efficient quality setting, or up to 3 hours at the highest quality 24Mbps setting – as well as to removable SDHC memory cards.

For easy sharing of movies, the LEGRIA HF S100 shoots straight to memory cards.

CANON LEGRIA HF-SERIES HD FLASH CAMCORDERS: SUPERB IMAGE QUALITY, STUNNING DESIGN

Canon introduces its smallest, most stylish High Definition (HD) camcorders ever: the LEGRIA HF20 and LEGRIA HF200. Recording outstanding Full HD 1920x1080 movies, these new models are around 17% smaller than their predecessors.

Incorporating a new version of the Canon HD Camera System with a 15x optical zoom, they encourage consumers to discover the spirit of Freecording: the idea that HD movies can be captured anywhere, at anytime – and always with stunning results.

The Dual Flash Memory LEGRIA HF20 combines 32GB of internal memory, enough for over 12 hours of recording time, and straight-to-memory card shooting. Alternatively, the LEGRIA HF200 records movies and photographs to convenient SDHC (High Capacity) memory cards that are ideal for sharing. With a range of new, user-friendly shooting features powered by Canon’s next generation processor – DIGIC DV III – the LEGRIA HF20 and LEGRIA HF200 are smart and stylish.

“These camcorders amaze on two levels; their tiny proportions, and their ability to capture such great footage,” says Roger Machin, product manager, Canon Consumer Imaging, South Africa. “This is stunning, Full HD quality in your pocket – ready for Freecording any moment during your day.”

The unique advantage of the Canon HD Camera System

Re-engineered for the LEGRIA HF20 and LEGRIA HF200, an updated Canon HD Camera System delivers sharper, smoother video images that are more colourful than ever before. All parts of the system – lens, CMOS sensor and image processor – are made by Canon, only for Canon, and are optimised to work perfectly together.

A new Canon HD Video Lens is manufactured to the most exacting standards, providing the resolution necessary for HD imaging. The extended reach of a 15x optical zoom helps users get closer to distant action. The lens incorporates Canon’s Super Range Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS), an advanced system that combines two methods of shake detection to better compensate for vibrations across the frequency range – leading to smooth, steady footage. A high resolution 3.3 Megapixel image sensor captures images at a resolution even higher than that required for Full HD. Canon’s new DIGIC DV III processor handles this enormous amount of image information, recording data at the maximum rate permissible under the AVCHD standard: 24Mbps. The final result is 1920x1080 Full HD video defined by vivid colours and exceptional detail. DIGIC DV III also supports the expanded colour gamut of xvYCC Colour Space (x.v.Color) and Face Detection Technology.

Shortcuts to great movies

Canon’s new DIGIC DV III processor brings Face Detection to Canon camcorders for the first time.

Canon Face Detection Technology can detect up to 35 faces in a single frame, optimising shooting settings appropriately. Up to nine faces can be highlighted, one of which can be selected by the user as the scene’s main reference point. Sophisticated Face Select and Track technology – similar to that found in Canon compact digital cameras – ensures that the chosen face remains selected for as long as possible.

Face Detection AE (Auto Exposure) harnesses the power of DIGIC DV III to quickly achieve correct exposure. Face Detection AF (Auto Focus) employs Canon’s unique Instant AF system – which offers both speed and accuracy – to track faces and ensure that they are correctly focused. Canon’s Face Detection system is unique, responding exceptionally quickly and smoothly – even when faces are framed against backgrounds that are significantly darker or lighter than the subject.

Face Detection also makes playback much easier: Face Jump and Face Timeline modes allow users to quickly find the footage they want.

Unique to Canon camcorders in 2009, Video Snapshot mode provides an easy way to record a day out – doing away with the need for complex editing. All it takes is the press of a single button to capture a four second sequence of video. Engaging movies can then easily be created from a sequence of these clips. The finished movie can be played back to music – five rights-free tracks are supplied on CD and pre-loaded onto the camcorder. Alternatively, users can upload tracks from their own library.

With the new Pre REC function, the camcorder continually buffers three seconds of movie footage while the LCD screen is open. This means that, from the moment the record button is pressed, the camcorder also captures all of the action that took place three seconds before. Pre REC effectively allows users to rewind time and preserve moments that would otherwise be missed.

Superb still shooting

Alongside dedicated Video and Still shooting modes, a third option on the function dial introduces Dual Shot. Switching to Dual Shot sets all of the camcorder’s key controls to automatic, leaving the user free to concentrate on shooting movies and taking up to 3.3 Megapixel photographs. In Dual Shot, stills can be taken at any point – even during video recording.

Accessing Playback mode has also been simplified. With a single press of a dedicated button, users gain access to a thumbnail menu displaying the footage or the still images they have captured, ready for preview. Photo Burst allows users to capture stills from a sequence of recorded video. With a press of the Photo button 25 individual shots are created from a single second of video – a fun way to capture the best scenes as photographs.

Ultra compact, ultra powerful – the benefits of flash memory

The new LEGRIA HF20 and LEGRIA HF200 are Canon’s smallest-ever HD camcorders. Weighing just 340g, their diminutive design is possible because of flash memory.

Far smaller and much lighter than alternative recording formats, flash brings with it a range of benefits – including quicker start-up times and lower power consumption, allowing users to keep on shooting for longer. Flash memory is also incredibly robust. Unlike tapes and Hard Disk Drives, it has no moving parts, so footage remains safe even if the camcorder is dropped or shaken.

The Dual Flash Memory LEGRIA HF20 offers users maximum flexibility: 32GB of internal memory is sufficient for over 12 hours of HD recording. The additional option of shooting to memory card is a handy way to supplement capacity on particularly long days out.

The LEGRIA HF200 is a great tool for those who want to share movies. Shooting straight to SDHC memory cards, this high capacity media is compact and easy to pass on to friends.

CANON PROJECTORS PLAY KEY ROLE IN WORLD-FIRST INTERACTIVE DINING EXPERIENCE

In 2008, following three years of development, Danny Potter and Noel Hunwick, two entrepreneurs who met at Oxford University, launched Inamo – an Oriental fusion restaurant with an innovative technological design.

It was also 16 months prior to the launch of Inamo, that the entrepreneurs started working with Canon to develop the solution. From the outset the Canon XEED SX60 was identified as the right projector for its ability to display a high-resolution image over a short focal range.

The XEED SX60 offers SXGA+ resolution and LCOS technology for near seamless images, plus a 1.7 wide-angle zoom lens. In addition, its near-silent operation made it the ideal choice.

Today, Inamo gives diners control of theire dining experience via an innovative interactive system. Using a touch pad, customers are able to explore a menu projected onto their table.

The diners can view the illustrated menu and send their order directly to the kitchen via the interactive ordering system. Diners can also select the ‘Chef Cam’ and watch live footage of their food being prepared.

The surface can be personalised using different patterns, images and themes. Diners can also use the interface to view and arrange transport by referencing maps of the London underground, or even book a taxi through the system.

In the first four months of its opening approximately 13,000 customers ate at Inamo. Currently, the restaurant averages close to a couple of hundred customers a day in the 62 seat restaurant.

ACCENTURE ACHIEVES OUTPUT SUCCESS AND SAVINGS WITH CANON UNIFLOW

Global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company Accenture last year implemented Canon’s uniFLOW tracking software with great success. As a result the company has, for the first time, been able to obtain accurate usage reports which in turn have enabled the organisation to mitigate discrepancies between reports and actual individual usage.

The success of the project has also seen Accenture recently purchasing the latest version of the software, uniFLOW 4 which has already been installed at the organisation’s offices in Johannesburg. “The software has been tested and is 100 percent accurate and operational,” comments Melanie Pearson at Accenture.

Looking at the initial project, Accenture had in the previous nine years used three solutions, from different vendors, with varying success. However, since implementing uniFLOW the company now benefits from complete accurate reporting.

“From years of exposure to inaccurate reporting, UNIFLOW is the only way to go in corporate and companies requiring accurate analysis and reliable reports that can be audited,” comments Pearson.

The company also made mention of the integrity, commitment and an ongoing proactive approach by Canon Business Center’s technical department which in turn made the solution work. “The stewardship and enthusiasm to learn and continually develop and grow is evident in Shakeel Ahmed and Zakeer Khan’s involvement and collaboration with global teams to reach a solution – even though this was a first for them.”

“Having these two individuals on the technical team is an asset to Canon, and certainly contributes significantly to the service levels that we have come to expect.”

uniFLOW Output Manager 4.0. Developed by NT-Ware, allows businesses to save money through efficient print processes, while also granting greater control over print security.

With uniFLOW businesses can minimise print costs through a single application which enables users to access and amend finishing options at a Canon multifunctional device.

CANON REACHES HALF CENTURY MARK FOR SLRs

Canon SA celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Canon SLR (single lens reflex) cameras in February this year, which the company has been building and selling since the launch of the Canon Flex in May 1959.

Today, Canon SLR cameras have been accepted as the standard for amateur and professional photography and, to date, over 50 million Canon SLRs have been sold worldwide.

“It is truly a remarkable achievement, and one which we are extremely proud of. However, despite our well-known benchmarks we will continue to invest greatly in the research and development of lens technology, adhering to our users’ ever-diverse needs,” comments Michelle Janse van Vuuren, general manager: marketing at Canon Consumer Imaging SA.

The EOS series was born in 1987 with the EOS 650 and the EF-series (Electro focus) lens system where the camera and lens communicate through electrical contacts rather than mechanically, as was previously the case.

The EOS series and EF lenses have proved incredibly popular with more than 40 million EF lenses sold worldwide. Significantly, 10 million of these have been produced within the last three years, thanks to the most radical change in photography and the biggest boom – the move from film to digital.

It was the debut of the EOS 300D in September 2003 which catapulted Canon’s position in the digital SLR marketplace as it was affordable and therefore aimed at general consumers. The professional EOS-1 series cameras and EF lens are chosen by the majority of the world’s news and sports photographers.

The recently introduced EOS 5D Mark II is the first camera to record Full HD movies and opens a multitude of new possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers.

3-SELFS INDIVIDUALS ACKNOWLEDGED

Canon SA employees Yolande Reid, Melani Joubert, Eugene Austin, Sumantha Strachan and Jan Venter were recently chosen as the 3-Selfs Award winners, in their respective departments, for South Africa.

Chosen by each country’s staff contingent, individuals are acknowledged for their ability to embody Canon’s 3-Selfs criteria which are self-motivation; self-management; and self-awareness.

CANON, BEELD AND MITSUBISHI ENTICE READERS WITH OUTSTANDING PHOTO COMPETITION

Canon SA in conjunction with Beeld and Mitsubishi Motors ran a very successful photo competition from December 2008 to February 2009, which saw the winning photographers walking away with over a R100 000 in equipment.

Thousands of Beeld readers voted for their favourite photos in the respective Adventure and Nature categories – the eight finalists where therefore popular and worthy winners.

It is the 4th photo competition Canon and Beeld have run together and it has become somewhat of an institution in the amateur photography arena. Indeed, not only does it provide photographers with a platform to showcase their skill but also enable them to win leading photographic equipment.

This year’s competition, for example, saw Canon giving away five EOS 450D cameras and EF-S18-55 lens kit bundles worth in excess of R10 000 each. Additionally, Canon sponsored PowerShot SX100 IS digital cameras; one HF-100 digital video camera and two PIXMA MX850 printers.

“Our photo competition never seizes to amaze us; each time we receive an astonishing amount of entries and support from the readers. We couldn’t be happier with the results and subsequent coverage and branding mileage we get from the competition,” comments Michelle Janse van Vuuren, marketing manager at Canon Consumer Imaging SA.

CANON MAKES A DIFFERENCE WITH WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECT

Canon SA’s Internal Waste Management Process is almost a year and half old and with the ongoing contribution and commitment of all the company employees it is already making a difference.

Under the regulations and auspices of the ISO 14 000 accreditation, the programme for example entails the proactive waste of management at Canon’s Midrand premises. This includes the management of internal waste such as the kitchen and desk areas and subsequent handling and separation of waste such as organics, plastic, general, as well as ink cartridges and equipment.

Internal Waste Management Process steps include:

• Organic waste such as fruit and bread and polystyrene food packaging are placed in the kitchen bins only;
• Paper is placed in paper boxes in the various departments or alternatively in an additional paper bin situated under employees’ desks; and
• General waste e.g. tins and plastic (bottles etc.) are placed in the general waste paper bin situated under desks.

“If each company can implement a similar system, we as corporate South Africa can positively contribute to the protection of our environment,” says Kathryn Whittall, communications manager at Canon SA.

CANON AND REKORD CLEAN UP PRETORIA

The Pretoria-distributed Rekord newspaper in conjunction with Canon SA is hosting an exciting competition as part of the publication’s drive to clean-up the environment.

The competition sees Grade 10 tourism and geography students participating by indentifying areas, outside their school grounds, in Pretoria that need cleaning; whether a river or spruit – the areas must be beautified to help create a clean and safe environment.

Canon is supporting the competition by sponsoring nine Canon PowerShot SX110 IS digital cameras that will be given to the winning schools in each of the paper’s nine distribution areas.

In order to enter the competition, a detailed portfolio of before and after photographs of each project has to be sent to the newspaper; entry closes on 17 April 2009. A panel of independent adjudicators will select the winners. The winners will be announced in May in a special supplement in Rekord.

“Creating awareness amongst our youth is one of the first steps in conserving our environment. The clean-up Pretoria project is a great way to get school children proactively involved, instilling a sense of responsibility while making it fun at the same time,” comments Michelle Janse van Vuuren, general manager: marketing at Canon Consumer Imaging SA.

CANON SA JOINS EARTH HOUR

As a Conservation Partner of the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) Canon SA and its employees recently created awareness and participated in the global Earth Hour, a worldwide event that puts the spotlight on climate change.

According to the WWF and Earth Hour sponsor, the participation of this year’s event, held on 28 March at 20h30 respectively in each country, exceeded 2008, when over 53 million people in 371 cities in 35 countries participated. The 2007 inaugural Earth Hour was limited to Sydney, Australia. An estimated 4.7 million light bulbs were switched off in South Africa alone.

This year saw lights dimming for one hour from the remote Chatham Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean to Sydney's Opera House and the Eiffel Tower, to the Empire State Building and Seattle's Space Needle – all a symbolic call to change the Kyoto Protocol.

WWF officials call Earth Hour: "The world's first-ever global vote for the future of our planet.”
Back home, President Kgalema Mothlante signed up for Earth Hour 2009 at the National Climate Change Summit.
